β¨Sometimes the job that pays is good. It fits. It's steady. You even like it.
But then there's the dream that really excites you. The thing that makes your heart race, your eyes sparkle, and your soul say "Yes, this is it!"
So how do you balance the two? For me, it's reminding myself that the job isn't in competition with the dream. It's a bridge. It's fuel. It gives me a solid foundation while I quietly (and not so quietly π) build the life I can't wait to wake up to.
Both can coexist. You can be grateful for the job that supports you and stay lit up about the dream that excites you. Together, they keep you moving forward.
π Reframe the Role of Your Job
Instead of thinking of your job as competing with your dream, see it as fueling your dream.
Your job gives you income, structure, and a stable base.
Your dream project gives you creativity, growth, and excitement.
Both together are part of the journey, not in opposition.
πͺ Find Micro-Meaning at Work
Even if it's not fireworks, look for little sparks that keep you engaged. Ask yourself:
What parts of this job do I genuinely enjoy? (colleagues, helping others, creative problem solving, routines)
Where can I grow here that might later serve my dream? (skills, networking, resilience)
Focusing on these nuggets makes the day-to-day more rewarding.
π§ Keep the Dream in Sight
Daily reminders: Keep a sticky note, phone wallpaper, or journal entry that reflects your dream.
Small daily actions: Even 15 minutes on your project after work keeps momentum alive. That way, you feel your "real life" isn't on pause.
π‘ Shift Energy with Rituals
If work drains you, create intentional rituals to reset your energy:
β’ A walk after work to transition out of "job mode."
β’ A playlist or candle to mark the beginning of "dream work time."
β’ A gratitude jot at lunch to remind yourself you're building toward something bigger.
π± Anchor in the Long Game
Remember: this is temporary. Your job is a bridge. You're in the building phase of the life you want. Holding that perspective prevents discouragement and helps you stay patient.
π Lizzie reminder: Sometimes resilience is about holding steady through the in-between, knowing you're building something bigger than today.
π Do you feel that pull between what's good and what excites you?
