The Glow After Dark
It's that time of year again - the clocks have fallen back, and suddenly it's dark by four o'clock. For many, that shift can feel heavy. The days seem shorter, the evenings stretch longer, and there's a subtle fatigue that creeps in when the sun disappears so early. But what if instead of resisting the darkness, we learned to glow through it?
I've found comfort in the cozy rituals that make these darker days not only bearable but beautiful. Every evening, when I walk through my front door after work, I'm greeted by the warm flicker of candlelight - not real candles, but the kind that click on with a timer. By six o'clock, they've already filled my home with that peaceful golden hue, like a soft exhale after the rush of the day. It's simple, but that glow makes such a difference.
My evenings now have their own rhythm. I journal both morning and night - a pause that lightens my day and clears space in my mind. I've promised myself a few evening walks under the streetlights, not for exercise but for reflection, for reconnecting with myself and the world around me.
And then comes the gentle self-care. Washing my face, applying my creams, maybe a little dry brushing for circulation and lymphatic flow - it's not vanity, it's ritual. It's a way of saying to my body, thank you for carrying me today. These small acts of care prepare me for rest, for peace, for sleep. They are my glow after dark.
The dark doesn't have to dim us - it can teach us softness, reflection, and grace. We can find light in ritual, in stillness, and in choosing to care for ourselves intentionally.
